Welcome to "Madtown" Madison, Wisconsin -- one of the greatest places to live in the United States due to the low unemployment rates, the flourishing economy, and vast array of entertainment for both visitors and locals!
The main downtown area of Madison is State Street; lined with restaurants, espresso cafes, and a number of shops where only pedestrians, buses, emergency vehicles, delivery vehicles and bikes are allowed. King Street has more appeal to the growing white-collar/high-tech population with its upper-end restaurants and cafes.
At Capitol Square, Dane Country Farmer's Market is a popular place to go on Saturday mornings during the summer months. Also at Capitol Square, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra hosts free concerts on Wednesday evenings, and on the second Saturday in August there is the Great Taste of the Midwest craft beer festival.
Madison also hosts the Rhythm and Booms -- a fireworks celebration coordinated with music. This event usually begins with a fly-over by F-16s from the local Wisconsin Air National Guard. The festival is the largest and longest fireworks display in the Midwest, and should not be missed!
During the winter, a number of sports enthusiasts take the time to enjoy ice-skating, ice fishing, cross country skiing, ice hockey, and snow kiting. Throughout the rest of the year you can spend your time sailing on the open lakes or going biking and hiking along the lake trails.
Madison, Wisconsin prides itself on having designated bike lanes in the city, and also for having one of the most extensive bike trail systems in the entire US. Naturally, this would spawn a very active cyclist culture. It's very common to see groups of friends bicycling together throughout the city. The Bicycle tourism alone is an $800 million industry in Wisconsin, which is 20% of the nation's bicycling industry manufacturing capacity.
There are also a number of cooperative organizations in the Madison area that range from grocery stories to housing co-ops to engineering firms and cab companies, and even a number of credit unions. Madison has also been labelled as the most liberal city in the state, and was even nicknamed "Madtown". Madison got this nickname because of the event called "Freakfest on State Street", where the University of Wisconsin-Madison hosts a Halloween event that consists of bands and other organized activities.
Madison contains a vibrant music scene and covers a wide spectrum of living musical culture. There are several venues that offer live music almost every night of the week, spreading from the Barrymore Theatre to the Annex. Several small coffee houses and wine bars offer live music every night, which makes for great entertainment while also opening up opportunities for local artists to make themselves known. While coffee houses are fine for some of the local artists, the bigger headliners perform at the Orpheum Theatre or at the UW Theatre on campus, which can house almost 2,000 viewers.
Madison also contains a number of art galleries, historical museums, historical architecture, and much more. Come see for yourself what makes any Madison WI zip code such an amazing place to be!
