As is the case with most of the state capitals in the United States, the city of Madison Wisconsin is not actually the biggest city in the state. That honor goes to the city of Milwaukee, which has about double the population of Madison, the state's capital. Whether the founders of the states had this in mind when they applied for statehood no one really knows for sure; however in this regard Wisconsin carries on a nation wide trend. As with most of the smaller states (by which we mean, not Texas, California, or New York) you will find that the places to find top tier activities such as a girl hockey tournament are not in fact the capitals.

However, that is not to say that Madison and the other state capitals are without their appeal. Far from it; in fact one of the first highlights of a place like Madison is its economy. Because the state legislature is located there, government is the main business of this city which has just over 200,000 people. Having government as your foundation is always helpful, as even in slow economic times the business of government must continue. That means there is always employment for people within the legislature and other areas. You might not have as many chance to win a car as you might in a bigger city, but you will have a better chance at a fulfilling career.

Another highlight in terms of both the economy and opportunity is the University of Wisconsin. Outside of the government, it is the largest employer in the city. People can also avail themselves of the many courses the university offers, opting to learn English as a second language or enrolling in the school of nursing, whatever pursuit you choose.

The location of the state's university within Madison has also meant that the city is expanding. Graduates can find a lot of work in the growing biotechnology and high tech industries throughout the city. Again, this contributes to the fact that more people have jobs in Madison than anywhere else in the country. Money like that means it might be a good place to try out food product launches and other entrepreneurial endeavors.

And of course, Madison has a flavor all its own. The earthier aromas of Milwaukee - the beer and the cheese - may overwhelm Madison in the popular mindset, but if you want to find the true highlights of Wisconsin, pick Madison. You can get a custom license plate frame proudly stating that you are from this city, a place of great opportunities. And let's face it, we do smell better too.
